Should there be some free models?

Recently, I got my steam account back again and went to download zombie master.
I was amazed it took a total of 14 minutes to DL everything on sammy's server not the map though.
So should there be some models we can use? Only the admins get to use all of them where other players dont get to use any of them

well it's 5 bucks for perm x2 points and access to models... so there's incentive to actually want to donate..

along with that, its a one time 14 minute download. not like you have to download every map change or something. and no. there won't be free models any time soon, most likely. its one of the things that helps keep the servers running and donations coming in.

Indeed, with the decreasing amount of paying admins now, I really do rely on donations to pay for the server. I do think we may have slightly too many though, as 14 minutes is a bit much, and may discourage new players to wait.

Well, if you want custom models without donating, then don't forget about the awesome, all-purpose !haxmenu.
Furthermore you can always politely ask an admin to sm_setmodel you.
On a good day, I might even add a specific model to the player perma model database for you.

But yeah, we have some amount of custom content.
Last week, I had one person telling me all the downloads took him 6:34 mins. He apparently stop-watched that.
When my hdd recently broke and I had to reinstall everything, of course I had to go through the process of waiting for the server to download all the custom content.
I expected it to take ages, but it wasn't that bad. Estimated 10 mins maximum.

How long it takes to download actually depends on several things, like your internet connection, the distance between you and the server, the server load, and so on.
So where downloading all custom files might take 5 mins for one guy, it could take 30 mins for some other guy.

And as it already has been said above, you'll only have to download those custom files once.
However, I think we really could make a complete zip/rar/7z package of custom files, and put it on the website for people to download.
If anyone is volunteering to compile such a pack, let me know. Ill provide you with the servers download list of files.

Well,I recently reinstalled ZM due to its constant crashing,and it took me ages to download all that stuff. @Indigo: But aren't the server downloads already compressed? Or just the map? Or does that .bz2 file format not have such a good compression rate?

Yes, all custom files (should be) are compressed with bzip2.
The bz2 compression algorithm is actually quite impressive. It is capable of compressing a several MB file to mere KB, always depending on the kind of data the file is, though.
However, sometimes distracted/confused/lazy Indigo or Cherry forget to compress the files on the server. xD

Just my .02 but SammyServers are the kind of place you make a commitment to as you build pts and develop your skills on a level not available on other servers. So if you plan to build your skills/points, and plan to play on sammyservers, and are just a player "jumping in" and you're not willing to go through that one-time download, you probably won't be playing on the server much anyways; so people leaving just because they don't want to wait for the dl aren't much of a loss....

ok soooo. solutions.
1. replace your survivor models to custom models to make yourself happy.
2. make a download for the custom content on the sammys servers site.
3. make server 1 have no custom content, so people can join and get a taste of the servers without having to wait 14 minutes.
4. get more people to donate to keep the servers running
5. ???
6. profit.

I could do a RAR at the weekend I guess... but anyway, most of the time I'll change models for fun, so you can usually rely on having your model randomyl changed when I'm online.

DO EET NAO cause i'm downloading the models again cause taters told me it was safe to reinstall and have all my custom stuff safe but he was WRONG

i'm pretty sure the RAR would be easier to make by the owners. they prolly have some hax that allows them to put all the models into one rar. idk.

I will, when I stop being lazy, code an auto compressor to run every 24 hours to update the files automatically, but for now, you can use: http://sammyservers.com/zmservers.rar

Note that this folder contains all the regular ZM models/materials, as well as our custom ones. I did however remove the weapons and zombies folder, so as not to mess with any custom models or materials you may have.
